Previous Seasons
The Golden State Warriors are on a mission to bring playoff-caliber basketball back to the Arena in Oakland. The dynamic duo of point guard Baron Davis and high-flyer Jason Richardson have generated an aura of confidence that has not been seen around Golden State since a man named Wilt donned Warrior uniform.
The San Francisco Warriors had Wilt Chamberlain to lean on in 1962-63. Chamberlain dominated inside the paint for the Warriors, leading the league in points per game with 44.8 and grabbing the rebounding title with 24.3. Despite Wilt “The Stilt’s” heroics, though, the Warriors were a lackluster team overall and mustered only 31 wins in the season.
The 1963-64 season was better as the team improved under new coach Alex Hannun and won the Western Division with a 48-32 record. The combination of Chamberlain, Wayne Hightower, and Nate Thurmond led the Warriors to the Western Division Finals, where they waged a furious battle with the St. Louis Hawks. After seven tough games, the Warriors emerged as winners and headed to the NBA Finals. Unfortunately for the Warriors they ran into the Boston Celtics. The NBA-dominating Celtics knocked off the upstart Warriors in a five-game series to win their 6th consecutive NBA Championship.
The San Francisco Warriors traded Wilt Chamberlain to the Philadelphia 76ers in 1964 and immediately regretted it, They won only 17 games that year. Rebounding in 1965-66 behind the play of Rookie of the Year Rick Berry, the Warriors showed steady improvement and came back to win the Western division in 1967. Berry pushed the Warriors past the Los Angeles Lakers and the St. Louis Hawks in the playoffs, only to find themselves faced with Wilt Chamberlain and the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA Finals. Chamberlain came back to haunt his old team, leading the 76ers to an NBA Championship in six games.
