2007-08 Golden State Warriors
The Warriors were the Feel Good Story of the NBA last season, with exploding performances by Monta Ellis and Andris Biedrins. Baron Davis and Jason Richardson were injured last season, and are expected to be back in shape for ’07-08. Golden State had its most successful season in over 20 years, and fans are expecting magic again this coming season. They proved they can knock off the Mavs in a history making upset – and ticket buyers are eager to see what the Warriors will bring in ’07-08.
Previous Seasons
The Golden State Warriors are on a mission to bring playoff-caliber basketball back to the Arena in Oakland. The dynamic duo of point guard Baron Davis and high-flyer Jason Richardson have generated an aura of confidence that has not been seen around Golden State since a man named Wilt donned Warrior uniform.
The San Francisco Warriors had Wilt Chamberlain to lean on in 1962-63. Chamberlain dominated inside the paint for the Warriors, leading the league in points per game with 44.8 and grabbing the rebounding title with 24.3. Despite Wilt “The Stilt’s” heroics, though, the Warriors were a lackluster team overall and mustered only 31 wins in the season.
The 1963-64 season was better as the team improved under new coach Alex Hannun and won the Western Division with a 48-32 record. The combination of Chamberlain, Wayne Hightower, and Nate Thurmond led the Warriors to the Western Division Finals, where they waged a furious battle with the St. Louis Hawks. After seven tough games, the Warriors emerged as winners and headed to the NBA Finals. Unfortunately for the Warriors they ran into the Boston Celtics. The NBA-dominating Celtics knocked off the upstart Warriors in a five-game series to win their 6th consecutive NBA Championship.
The San Francisco Warriors traded Wilt Chamberlain to the Philadelphia 76ers in 1964 and immediately regretted it, They won only 17 games that year. Rebounding in 1965-66 behind the play of Rookie of the Year Rick Berry, the Warriors showed steady improvement and came back to win the Western division in 1967. Berry pushed the Warriors past the Los Angeles Lakers and the St. Louis Hawks in the playoffs, only to find themselves faced with Wilt Chamberlain and the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA Finals. Chamberlain came back to haunt his old team, leading the 76ers to an NBA Championship in six games.
After appearing in the Conference Finals in 1973, the Warriors, who had packed up and moved to Oakland while changing their name to the Golden State Warriors, finally broke through with an NBA Championship. Head coach Al Attles assembled a team around Rick Berry that included Clifford Ray at center and Keith Wilkes at forward. Attles used an array of players in a team-oriented attack to win the Pacific Division title at 48-34. Along the way Berry averaged over 30 points per game. A six-game series win over the Seattle Supersonics gave the Golden State Warriors a berth in the Western Conference Finals, where they knocked off the Chicago Bulls in seven hotly contested games. The Golden State Warriors locked up their first NBA Championship by cruising past the Washington Bullets in a series sweep.
While Wilt Chamberlain and Rick Berry are no longer roaming the hardwood at the Arena in Oakland, there’s plenty of star power at head coach Mike Montgomery’s disposal. Baron Davis and Jason Richardson combine to form one of the NBA’s top backcourts. Playoff basketball is coming soon to those fans with Golden State Warriors tickets.
